Once upon a time, I used to be a member of lots of different women's groups on the 'net. And there were lots of them. There were the first ones, Random Acts of Kindness, Ladies of the Heart, The GardenHouse and Netsisters. Most of the others came from those, I would guess. Some of those other groups were for Christian women only, or had no particular religious affiliation; some insisted that members had to join committees and be active while others had no activity rule at all. They all had one thing in common. They all had the aim of making friends, having fun and gaining some support for each other. It was not all sunshine and roses though. Eventually, with so many divergent personalities, something is going to snap. I remember when Netsisters divided into Netsisters Forever and Netsisters.org after some falling out or other. At first, one had to be a member of one or the other, but then the rules were relaxed and it was possible to join both. And I did! NF became Serendipity Place, but that too has gone, as has Netsisters.org. I miss some of the people I used to know in those groups and I wonder what they are doing now. Being a bit of an addictive personality, I could not stop at just a few groups! And after a while I burned out, exhausted from too many committees, too many obligations and responsibilities. I enjoyed it all, but it got to be too much and so I dropped out of them all. But lately I've found myself thinking about those groups and searching for them, to see if they are still alive and active. I was very sad to discover that all of them have now folded. Many of the bigger groups closed down from around 2009. It is easy enough to get a domain, hosting and gather together a few members, but it is the sheer day-to-day organisation, dealing with different personalities and keeping everyone happy, that gets to be too much after a while. So many good intentions end up falling away. I think perhaps it is because of the demise of the personal website and the rise of the blog. (But more on that subject later.)
